Newtown was established as a residential and farming area in the early 19th century. The area took its name from a grocery store that stood where the Newtown railway station stands today. A sign atop the store read ‘New Town Stores’. The name New Town was then adopted.

King Street is the main street of Newtown and the centre of commercial and entertainment activity. The street follows the spine of a long ridge that rises up near Sydney University and extends to the south, becoming the Princes Highway at its southern end.

Today, Newtown is one of the most popular nightspots in Sydney. King Street is full of people all hours of the day and night. Off the main streets, Newtown has many quiet spots perfect for the bohemian community it is known for.

Within Newtown and surrounding suburbs you’ll find the state’s highest concentration of theatres and art spaces. Newtown School of Performing Arts attracts budding performers – don't be surprised to come across a student practicing clarinet in the local park, amongst the frolicking dogs. Many artistic Newtown inhabitants have gone onto achieve success including The Whitlams, Frenzal Rhomb, Christine Anu and Monica Trapaga

The rows of terrace houses in Newtown contribute to its character. For the most part, new developments are in the vein of the terrace house style, both for aesthetics and due to the limited amount of space available. North Newtown holds many of the historic jewels, and can be pricier than other parts of Newtown.
